energy. we're ready to go. and the 9ers quest for super bowl redemption begins tomorrow in nashville. we are live with a preview from music city. also, keep your eyes on the skies. one of the biggest meteor showers of the year is set for this weekend, the best time to catch this dazzling display. this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. let's begin this evening with the 9ers, the 49ers countdown to the team's season opener. it is on. tomorrow is the first step for the 9ers and their quest for championship number six. as your home for the 9ers preseason football, we've got you covered. our matt lively is joining us live from nashville ready for some football. hey there, matt. >> reporter: we're loving it here in nashville getting ready for the 9ers to kick off this season, all starts of the preseason here in tennessee. it was a bit of a short offseason

because that super bowl thing in february, but these guys are offing to get back onto the field. they want to get the bad taste out of their mouths from super bowl lviii from las vegas last year. the 49ers have done about everything but win one that counts. they have been to four nfc championship games, two super bowls, losses in both in the last five years and the overtime loss to the chiefs in february, likely the toughest to swallow. 9ers won't be short on motivation this time and it starts with the captain fred warner. our vern glenn caught up with number 54 about the massive chip on his shoulder. >> reporter: do you have to go out with this imaginary 200-pound chip to kind of get on your shoulder to get you going? >> if that's what it takes, vern, i'll carry that imaginary 300-pound chip, whatever it takes. people will think you just get to snap your fingers and get right back to

to the white house. >> you're listening to kamala harris' campaign rally in glendale, arizona. then she heads to las vegas for a campaign event tomorrow. following that she's on her way to san francisco. harris' arrival in the bay area is expected to add to a very busy weekend for traffic in the city. preparations are underway for her fundraiser. we have details and all the excitement from harris supporters. >> reporter: it's been a whirlwind campaign season for the democratic party with vice president kamala harris now stepping in as the presidential nominee. the vp is slated for a bay area homecoming saturday for a private fundraiser at the fairmont hotel with tickets costing as much as 50,000 a pop. this event is harris' first time back in the bay as the 2024 presidential candidate and supporters like pat johnstone say it feels like harris has revived the party.

>> she's coming home. this is her community. we are here people. >> reporter: the vp will mostly be among friends for this fundraiser. historically blue mega donors in san francisco are expected to donate millions to her campaign, including some tech big wigs. reid hoffman, co-founder of linkedin and ron conway are supposedly on the list of names. other industry giants shifted their support to the trump campaign, with many attending j.d. vance's fundraiser last month. >> i think the energy in the room will show the kind of excitement that democrats across the nation are feeling about this campaign now. >> reporter: this isn't harris' only fork in the road. nolan higdon says while young voters are certainly more energized following biden's exit, they're still concerned about key issues. >> the gaza issue is going to be critical for her because those young voters were turning against biden, either refusing to vote or some threatening to vote for trump. she's going to try and keep those voters.

>> reporter: criticism aside, harris returns to san francisco having reset the race for the white house and having fired up a key democratic base. >> her candidacy and the choice of governor walz has really turned the dynamic around in terms of young people's involvement. >> reporter: the fairmont hotel did tell us they are preparing now getting everything ready. they've got signs up to let you know where you can and can't park. we should know at this point all tickets for this event are sold out. >> wow. quite a price range, too, for all the donors. we'll know when she's along her route, shows streets will be closed off and we'll know someone is coming through, a dignitary. thank you so much. meanwhile former president donald trump is expected to appear at a rally in montana later this evening, but his plane was diverted over a mechanical issue. the plane landed safely in billings. trump headed to the rally in another plane. former san francisco mayor willie brown setting the record

straight after donald trump claimed the two of them were involved in a scary helicopter emergency landing. >> well, i know willie brown very well. in fact, i went down in a helicopter with him. we thought maybe this is the end. we were in a helicopter going to a certain location together and there was an emergency landing. this was not a pleasant landing and willie was a little concerned. >> so we caught up with willie brown today and asked him about it. he told us it wasn't true. >> i just heard about it like everybody else, somewhere on television or radio. no. are you kidding me? i wouldn't ride with him for fear something might happen to the helicopter. >> well, trump may have been mixing up willie brown with former california governor jerry brown. he and trump rode in a helicopter together to tour paradise after the camp fire in 2018. no emergency landing was reported. to see

about outside lands, just head to kpix.com. turning now to weather as we take a live look outside, an air quality advisory. it's been extended through tomorrow because of wildfire smoke possibly drifting our way. let's go to chief meteorologist paul heggen with how our air quality is looking now. hi, paul. >> jules, it doesn't look great from the top of mount diablo, but air quality has been in the moderate air quality across the entire bay area today. things should gradually improve as we head through the upcoming weekend from the moderate category everywhere today, just a few microclimates around the bay area in the moderate category tomorrow, east of the oakland hills and santa clara valley. then we should be good across the board by sunday, monday, and tuesday. the reason for that improvement is the winds. those will kick in and the continuing onshore wind will accelerate, especially sunday. that will help push the smoke farther and farther off to our east, so not only improving air quality, but the stronger onshore wind will have an

impact on temperatures by sunday. we'll look at the cooldown in store coming up in a few minutes. >> paul, thank you. in concord it took multiple firefighters to get a house fire under control as smoke just poured out of the building. the fire was on san jose avenue. it was first reported just after 11:00 in the morning. we're told a search and rescue team actually went inside the home. they did not find anyone. no injuries were reported, also no word yet how it started. ♪ san francisco city leaders and police honored the life and service of officer luciano ortega today. he died unexpectedly playing rugby a few days before he would have turned 30 years old. he was with the sfpd for nine years working mostly out of the mission station.

a county jail in san bruno will no lodger use tear gas in their training sessions after a chemical leak that caused nearly 30 children at a nearby school to get sick. this all happened in may, the sheriff's department saying conversations with the school district and community leaders are ongoing and future updates will follow. still ahead, if you are a stargazer, you might want to keep your eyes peeled for a meteor shower this weekend. we'll tell you the best time and best place to catch a glimpse. plus, it is the stern grove concert series returning this weekend, the grammy aw

there's growing concern along california's central coast as spacex moves forward with plans to dramatically increase rocket launches from vandenberg air force base. the sonic booms from the launches have been bothering the locals and disrupting the national environment, but the l.a. times reports military officials flatly rejected the request for additional monitoring from state and environmental regulators. the space force is hoping to stage 36 launches thi excitement growing for an annual meteor shower, it's expected to peak this weekend. it's sending streaks of lights across our skies or what we see

just burn up in the sky. meteors make for a great light show like this weekend's perseid meteor shower. >> the perseids are one of the best showers always in the year of various meteor showers that the earth runs into. >> reporter: astronomer scott hildreth explains that what the earth is running into over the weekend is debris left behind by a comet, debris no bigger than grains of sand slamming into earth at 130,000 miles an hour. >> as they do, that they heat up the air and the air glows and what we see is a streak of light across the sky. the best thing to do is to look after midnight when our moon will set. so the sky will be as dark as possible and good, dark skies, you can see as many as 100 an hour. that's almost two or three a minute. >> reporter: as for the usual astronomy gear -- >> you don't want binoculars. you don't need a telescope. this is a very democratic

on to the fire watch, el dorado county's crozier fire has burned to more than 1,900 acres burning through gold country only 5% contained. the number of firefighters has doubled on this one since wednesday. crews are still battling the largest active wildfire in the state. the park fire has burned more than 428,000 acres and destroyed more than 600 structures. fire crews are hoping cooler temps over the weekend will certainly help slow the spread. containment has stayed at 34% since monday. good time to bring in paul heggen to talk about our air quality as some of that smoke drifts into the bay area. >> yeah. it's not bad now. it's not great, but it will continue to get better as the

onshore wind kicks in. things are looking pretty good in general as we head into the weekend. let's get to the details of the weekend forecast. a lot of stuff is going on, including outside lands. at golden gate park temperatures will reach the upper 60s tomorrow, morning fog giving way to sunshine in the afternoon, mid-60s for highs on sunday. sunday will be the cooler half of the weekend for everybody. you look at the fog spreading out from the mark hopkins hotel camera perspective, generally quiet weather this weekend, less hazy sunday as air quality improves, not as warm sunday, a cooler pattern for everybody sunday, monday, and tuesday. very few day-to-day changes heading through next week, settling into this tranquil august weather pattern. our view from the salesforce tower camera shows the fog starting to swallow up the top of the tower, likely the last time we'll get this perspective today, downtown 59 degrees, cool if you're heading to the giants game as they take on the detroit tigers, mid-60s across

the bay in oakland with inland temperatures in the 70s and 80s, 76 in san jose and santa rosa, 83 livermore, barely below 90 degrees in concord. tomorrow is another day of toasty temperatures inland but not the ridiculous heat we had for so much of july. the visibilities are going to drop as fog makes a good push across the bay into the inland valleys by early tomorrow morning. it won't take long for the fog to retreat from the inland valleys and temperatures will start to warm up. we'll see visibilities improving around the bay by midday. along the coast i don't think you'll see the fog retreat from the coast heading into the afternoon on saturday and the next several days. temperatures tonight mostly 50s, the warmest spots staying around or above 60 degrees. then temperatures warm up. it's going to be toasty out there for an adoptable dog of the day. this is lulu available for adoption from the east county animal shelter in dublin, temperatures there in the 80s, a lot of 90s in the tri-valley and delta,

but that's not out of control hot for this time of year. if you want details on lulu, i'll put a link on all forms of social media after this weathercast. let's look what happens with our highs tomorrow. we'll fill in the map and look at those forecast highs which will reach the mid- to upper 80s for most of the santa clara valley, low 90s for morgan hill, a mix of 60s, 70s, and 80s around the bay, 60s and 70s in san francisco and oakland, upper 70s in fremont, temperatures reaching mostly to the 80s inland in the north bay. the exception to that, santa rosa up into the low 90s. you'll have company east of the oakland hills where temperatures are also going to get into the low to mid-90s by tomorrow afternoon. that's about 4 or 5 degrees above average. everybody is in for a cooler pattern as we hit the second half of the weekend into much of next week. the long range outlook, eight to 14-day time frame from the climate prediction center, continues to show the warmest air pushed farther and farther off to our

east with a strong signal towards cooler than normal conditions, not just for the bay area, but most of california and the entire west coast. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we'll focus on the next seven days. one more warm, even hot day inland tomorrow and then backing down to the 80s on a day-by-day basis through most of next week. we'll keep that going as long as we can. like to keep the worst of the heat at bay this time of year. temperatures around the bay, speaking of bay, not warm, only upper 60s for highs sunday and monday, morning fog giving way to afternoon sunshine while along the coast the fog is not going anywhere, also patches of mist, drizzle, high temperatures mostly in the low 60s, the warmest day wednesday bringing highs up to the mid-60s wednesday afternoon, which is not warm, but it's slightly above average for the coast. >> thank you. when we come back, the san jose jazz festival is underway, what you can expect at this year's event. that's next.
